A follow-up to Mia's IEP meeting
Last Monday Krys and I had a meeting with the principal of Mia's school to discuss next year's personnel and programs. It was a fairly short meeting, but it left us a bit heartened. Her principal said that they plan to bring back all the teachers from this year (which, of course, doesn't mean the teacher will definitely be back, but at least that's the plan) and that the entire special ed. department is meeting on 24 April to discuss next year. This was the first year they were mainstreaming kids, and I know they've had some success and some problems, so she said they need to have a meeting to discuss what they're doing going forward. She said that Mia is one of those kids who's presented them with difficulty, because she's obviously not suited to be in general ed. all that much but she's higher-functioning than a lot of the kids who can't be mainstreamed at all. We didn't get many specifics, but at least she heard our concerns and said she would keep us in the loop. She also told us that they will definitely know what's going on before the end of the school year, which (unfortunately) isn't always the case.
Despite the lack of concrete information, we came out feeling better, because we felt the principal was actually listening to us and agreed with our concerns. We told her we'd call her back after the 24th to find out what happened at their meeting - we're not letting them off the hook that easily!

I stumbled across your blog as I was cleaning out my website bookmarks and really enjoyed catching up on what Mia has been up to. I am so happy to hear of her weight gain and progress! Greg and Krys, I wanted to let you know that Mia is a such an inspiring child and having the opportunity to be Mia’s teacher for one year was an irreplaceable learning experience! I learned more from her in our short time together than I probably would have learned in 5 years as a teacher. Keep up your high expectations for Mia and her education!!

Laura: Thanks so much for stopping by and saying hello. We hope you keep reading - Mia has a lot going on these days, so while I don't update as often as I should, she's going to be going through some (hopefully) exciting things. I hope you're doing well!
